The Discovery Center at Water’s Edge: Science Made Fun in Harford County

Hands-On STEM Experience

The Discovery Center at Water's Edge in Belcamp is a space my family loves, and every visit we find something new to explore.

Tucked along Route 40, this hands-on science and technology center is made for curious kids who love to experiment, build, and figure out how things work. It blends interactive exhibits with Harford County's own story, including our connection to Aberdeen Proving Ground.

Kids can explore freely at their own pace, spending as long as they want on whatever sparks their curiosity. My daughter loves the opportunity to build, test, and try again until she gets it right, and nobody is rushing her along to the next display. Big kids and little ones both find plenty to keep them busy, and we always leave talking about what she wants to try next time.

A Center Built for Exploration

The Discovery Center is filled with interactive exhibits, simulators, building stations, and activity tables that bring science, technology, and engineering to life. The hurricane simulator continues to be a favorite in our house, and the topography exhibit, where kids shape land and water in a Chesapeake Bay watershed sandbox, is always a hit too. Kids can also step into another world at the VR station.

In the Why Things Fly exhibit, kids can test their ideas in a wind tunnel, race balloon cars, and send balloon helicopters into the air, turning engineering into a game. Nearby, the interactive magnet wall lets kids arrange gears and design their own marble runs, trying new layouts again and again to see what works.

Construction Corner is perfect for builders, with a variety of tools that connect to math, science, social studies, and art. Kids can also build at the LEGO station, and the littles aren't left out either, with foam blocks to keep them busy while big kids explore. The activity tables are another great way to challenge yourself, with step-by-step instructions and volunteers on hand to help.

When everyone needs a break, head to the outdoor area behind the center. Pack a picnic and make a day of it!

Camps, Classes, and Festivals

Beyond regular visits, the Discovery Center offers plenty of ways for kids to dig deeper into science and technology. Most programs require preregistration, so be sure to visit their website for details.

Discovery Center at Water’s Edge is looking ahead to an exciting lineup of programs designed to spark curiosity, inspire creativity, and make STEM learning fun for everyone!

Upcoming programs include Science Saturdays, featuring engaging science experiments, robotics, and other interactive activities for children and families. These programs build on the success of their summer camps and school field trips, which provide students with memorable, hands-on STEM experiences beyond the classroom.

Through these programs, DCWE continues to create opportunities for children and families to explore, experiment, build, and discover the possibilities of science and technology.

Magic of Science Festival

One of the Discovery Center's biggest events is its Magic of Science Fair and Family Festival, a day packed with experiments, games, science demonstrations, and activities hosted by local STEM partners. The festival also includes a student science fair, giving young scientists a chance to show off their projects. This annual event is free to the public, so keep an eye on their website and grab tickets early for next year's event!
