A Local's Guide to Experiencing Harford County, Maryland

If you're planning a trip to Harford County, get ready to be surprised by just how much there is to experience. As a lifelong local, I'm still finding new trails, new restaurants, and little pockets of the county I never knew existed.

That's what I love most about Harford. No matter how familiar it becomes, there's always something new to discover. Whether you're planning a kid-friendly family trip, a weekend getaway with friends, a day on the water, or a quiet escape surrounded by nature, there's plenty here to make the trip your own.

Harford County is home to more than 90 state and county parks, 106 miles of shoreline, 11 breweries and wineries, and more than 500 events throughout the year.

Life on the Water in Havre de Grace

Havre de Grace is always an amazing place to start your trip. It sits where the Susquehanna River meets the Chesapeake Bay, and it's one of my favorite places in the county.

Stroll the waterfront promenade, explore Concord Point Lighthouse, browse the downtown shops, and grab something to eat along the way. Depending on the season, you can also kayak or paddleboard, or simply find a bench and watch the boats go by.

Spending time along the waterfront makes it easy to slow down and enjoy the day, and Havre de Grace is one of those places where you don't need a packed itinerary to have a great time.

Waterfalls and Wide-Open Trails

In my personal opinion, this is where the county truly shines.

Rocks State Park is a must for hikers, home to the King and Queen Seat, a striking 190-foot rock outcrop overlooking Deer Creek, and Kilgore Falls, Maryland's second-highest vertical waterfall. Both offer incredible views and are experiences everyone should try.

If you're looking for something a little more relaxed, trails at places like Eden Mill Park offer a chance to enjoy the outdoors without turning your day into a strenuous hike. Ladew Topiary Gardens is another beautiful option, with gardens and grounds that make for a memorable stop for the whole family.

One of my favorite things about Harford County is that you don't have to be an avid hiker or outdoor enthusiast to enjoy its natural beauty. There are plenty of ways to get outside and find your own pace.

A Farm Day You Won’t Forget

If you want to understand what makes Harford County special, spend a few hours on one of our farms. The county is full of them, and each one has its own personality.

FarmFinity at Stone View Farm in Darlington is one of our family's favorites. You can cuddle mini highland cows, pick your own flowers or pumpkins depending on the season, and wander a sensory garden built to welcome visitors of every ability.

For one of Harford’s most well-known destinations, Brooms Bloom Dairy offers a true “cow to cone” experience with ice cream on the dairy farm, along with homemade food options you’ll be craving long after your stay.

Downtowns Worth Wandering

Spend some time downtown.

Bel Air, the county seat, offers a mix of local shops, restaurants, and seasonal events, especially if your trip lines up with the Bel Air Farmers' Market or the magical Winter Wonderland. It's a great way to experience some of the local community and spend a few hours exploring.

Havre de Grace has its own charm that’s unmatched. Its historic waterfront downtown brings shopping, dining, and sightseeing together within a few blocks, making it easy to park the car and just explore.

Sometimes the best way to experience a place is to simply wander, and both of these downtowns are worth a visit during your stay.

Family Friendly Adventures

If you're looking for things to do in Harford County with kids, you've come to the right place.

The county is full of ways to build a full day around what kids actually want to do. From farms with animals to meet and playgrounds to indoor play spaces and outdoor adventures, it's easy to plan an activity-filled day.

Harford County's food scene surprises a lot of first-time visitors. My honest advice: don't plan every meal in advance. Leave room to find something along the way.

A Different County Every Season

There's no wrong time to experience Harford County, just a different version of the county depending on when you come.

Spring brings farmers' markets, blooming gardens, and farms coming back to life. Summer means waterfront days, outdoor festivals, and plenty of opportunities to spend time outside.

Fall is my personal favorite, with its foliage, pumpkin patches, and crisp weather made for hiking or walking through downtown with a coffee in hand.

Winter fills the towns with holiday markets, seasonal events, and a Winter Wonderland that feels straight out of a movie.

Pet-Friendly Harford County

If you're traveling with a four-legged family member, Harford has you covered too.

There's a dedicated dog park along the Ma & Pa Trail, dog-friendly patios at spots like Falling Branch Brewery and Independent Brewing Co., and the Bear Adventure Trail is a fun one for families to explore together.

Plenty of the county's hotels are pet-friendly as well, so you don't have to leave anyone behind.
