Where the holiday magic happens
When you’re looking for free things to do this holiday season in Bel Air, Maryland, Winter Wonderland has to be on your must-visit list.
Every year there's one evening when it officially feels like Christmas in our house. It's the night we bundle up, head downtown, and turn onto Main Street just as the lights of Winter Wonderland come on.
Suddenly, downtown Bel Air looks like a scene straight out of a Hallmark Christmas movie: twinkling storefronts, Santa in his sleigh, and a horse-drawn carriage clip-clopping down the street. It's small-town charm at its finest and so uniquely Harford County.
Over the years, Winter Wonderland became a tradition we can't imagine the holidays without. Cocoa first, always. A walk under the lights, a peek at the train garden, the visit with Santa, and a few family photos along the way.
Downtown Charm
Each holiday season, downtown Bel Air is wrapped in thousands of twinkling lights around the historic Bel Air Armory. On Winter Wonderland Saturdays Santa is stationed in his sleigh, there are horse-drawn carriage rides, live music and a holiday train garden our little one could watch for an hour. Best of all, everything is free.
But half the fun is simply strolling Main Street. We wander in and out of the little shops, where we've found some of our most thoughtful gifts and a few treats for ourselves, too. Shop owners greet you like a neighbor, and there's always a window display worth stopping for. Once we've warmed up our appetites, we head to one of the downtown restaurants for dinner, or grab a sweet treat to enjoy as we walk under the lights. These local businesses are the heart of our downtown, and Winter Wonderland is the perfect excuse to show them some love.
The Santa Experience
Bel Air's Santa is the real deal. Year after year, he has been the one constant in our visits. He never rushes, listens to every wish like it's the most important one he'll hear all night, and makes sure each child gets the most out of the experience.
We've watched our daughter go from nervously clinging to us to confidently marching up with a list ready, and Santa has been there for every visit, keeping the magic alive far longer than I knew it could.
Santa visits on Saturday’s, and will be waiting for you in his sleigh in front of the Circuit Courthouse on Main Street.
