One Area, So Many Ways to Call It Home
One of my favorite things about living here is that there isn't one version of what life looks like.
You can spend a morning walking along the waterfront in Havre de Grace, grab lunch downtown and be home before nap time. You can live closer to Bel Air and spend a Saturday bouncing between the playground, library and a favorite restaurant. Head north and suddenly your Saturday might involve a farm, a hiking trail and a stop for ice cream.
That variety is part of what makes choosing a community so personal. Instead of trying to tell you which area is "best," think about the profiles below as a way to get a feel for what each community offers and what kind of everyday life might fit your family.
Small-Town Charm Meets Everyday Convenience
Bel Air is one of those places that makes it easy to fill a day without going very far. Downtown gives you local restaurants, shops and community events, while the surrounding area offers plenty of parks, playgrounds, recreation and everyday conveniences.
For families, that balance is a big part of the appeal. In Bel Air, a simple outing can easily turn into a full day out. Grab breakfast, let the kids play, stop by the library and finish with dinner or ice cream. There's always another stop you can add.
It also keeps commuting manageable. Baltimore is about 40 minutes down I-95, close enough for a workday commute without giving up the small-town feel.
If you're new to the area, Bel Air is a great place to start exploring. A few places to put on your list: Lyn Stacie Getz Playground, Bel Air Library, Jurassic Golf & Arcade, and Amazing Glaze.
Waterfront Living With Historic Character
Havre de Grace feels different from the moment you arrive. The waterfront, historic buildings and walkable downtown give the city a distinct personality, and there is something about being able to end an ordinary afternoon with a walk along the water that never really gets old.
When considering your commute, Baltimore is a straightforward drive down I-95, usually around 45 minutes, and Amtrak's Perryville station nearby adds a train option for anyone who'd rather skip the traffic altogether.
For families, I especially love how many outings can be combined here. The library's Schooner Cove is a fantastic indoor option for younger kids, and from there you can easily head downtown, grab something to eat or make your way toward the waterfront and Millard Tydings Park playground.
Connected, Convenient and Full of Community
Aberdeen offers a convenient location with easy access to major roads and Aberdeen Proving Ground, but there is much more to the community than its location. Families have parks, recreation, community events and local attractions right in their backyard.
Baseball fans will recognize Ripken Stadium, while the Aberdeen Family Swim Center becomes a summer favorite for many local families. Festival Park and the local library also make it easy to find convenient, everyday ways to get out and enjoy your community.
For APG families, that convenience includes a comfortable commute to base, often just a 10 to 15 minute drive to the gates. The MARC Train out of Aberdeen Station also runs straight into Baltimore Penn Station for anyone commuting into the city instead.
Convenient Suburban Living With Plenty to Explore
Abingdon and Belcamp offer a suburban setting with easy access to shopping, restaurants, major roads and everyday conveniences. For families who want to be close to everything without necessarily living in a downtown environment, these communities are worth exploring.
This part of the county also puts you close to Aberdeen Proving Ground, often just a 10 to 15 minute drive to the gates, with Baltimore around 35 to 40 minutes down I-95 for anyone commuting into the city instead.
This community also has some of the best family resources in the county. The Bear Legacy Adventure Trail is designed with kids in mind, while the Abingdon Library has an impressive sensory room, children's space, playground and sensory trail. The Discovery Center at Water's Edge adds another opportunity to combine learning and play.
Space to Grow
Forest Hill and Fallston offer a nice middle ground for families who want established neighborhoods and a little more breathing room while still being close to Bel Air and everyday conveniences.
Commuting from here takes a little more patience than the towns closer to I-95. Baltimore generally runs 45 to 50 minutes depending on your route, so it's a better fit for families prioritizing space and schools over a short commute.
Forest Hill has quickly become a go-to spot for indoor family adventures, with places like Vault ActivePLAY and The Playroom offering completely different ways to burn off some energy. Add in nearby playgrounds, trails and outdoor spaces, and it is easy to see why families can build a pretty full weekend without going far.

A Little More Room to Roam
Churchville offers a quieter pace while still keeping you within easy reach of Bel Air and Aberdeen. As you head into this part of the area, you'll start to see more farmland, open space and the rural character that gives this part of Maryland its personality.
For me, one of the best things about communities like Churchville is that you don't have to choose between convenience and a connection to the outdoors. You can get to the things you need, but you're also close to farms, parks and the kinds of places that make an afternoon outside feel easy.
For commuters, this area is centralized, providing easy access to places like APG, I-95, and Bel Air.
Where Rural Life Shines
Head north and the landscape changes. You'll see rolling farmland, open fields, larger properties and plenty of reminders that this community has deep agricultural roots.
This part of the county never runs short on outdoor adventures for my family. Rocks State Park, Kilgore Falls and Eden Mill are just a few of the places that can turn an ordinary weekend into an adventure. Then there are the farms, seasonal events and local markets that give families plenty of reasons to come back throughout the year.
Something to consider if you're commuting: Baltimore runs closer to 50 minutes or more up here, mostly on two-lane roads. The trade-off is easy access north into Pennsylvania and the Lancaster area, which is a real draw for some families.
Slower Pace, More Open Space
The communities of Darlington, Street and Whiteford offer an even quieter side of the area. Here, open countryside and farmland are part of the everyday landscape, and community resources often feel a little more connected to the rural character of the area.
Stone View Farm is a great example of what makes this area special. Between meeting the animals, picking your own produce, and stopping by for one of their seasonal events, it's the a perfect way to spend a day on the farm.
Similar to other areas of northern Harford County, commuting from this far north will add additional drive time, generally an hour or more to Baltimore. Families who choose this area tend to be prioritizing space and privacy over commute time.
Convenient Living With Easy Access
The southern end of the county offers convenient access to Baltimore County, major transportation routes and a wide range of everyday amenities.
This area also has more waterfront than people expect. Flying Point Park and Mariner Point Park give families real water access, from paddling and fishing to just watching the boats go by, without needing a trip to Havre de Grace or the Bay.
For families, there are still plenty of opportunities to find community close to home. Libraries, parks, recreation programs and local businesses give families places to gather, play and build their routines.
Another great mention for these locations is that they offer one of the shortest commutes in the county. Baltimore is about 35 minutes away via US-40, and Edgewood's own MARC station puts you on a train into Baltimore Penn Station in under 30 minutes if you'd rather skip the drive entirely.

Is Harford County a good place to live?

Harford County tends to run more affordable than Baltimore County or areas closer to DC, especially on housing. Costs shift a lot by town, so for real figures, their buying guide is the best resource.
How far is Harford County from Baltimore and DC?
Close enough that Baltimore is an easy day trip and DC is doable without it feeling overwhelming. We've done plenty of last-minute "let's just go" outings to the city and been home in time for dinner, which is part of why this county works so well as a home base.
Which Harford County town is best for families with young kids?
Honestly, it depends on what your family actually uses. If you want to walk to a playground and a library in the same afternoon, Bel Air is hard to beat. If you want more indoor options for rainy days, Forest Hill has become a favorite of ours. What's the commute like from Harford County to Baltimore?
From Bel Air or Abingdon, the drive to downtown Baltimore is typically 35–55 minutes via I-95 depending on time of day. MARC Penn Line service from Aberdeen and Edgewood reaches Baltimore Penn Station in about 35 minutes. Drive times vary a lot depending on where in the county you land and what time you're driving, so if commute planning is a big factor for you, I always recommend reaching out to the Lee Tessier Team to find a location that works well with your commute.
How are Harford County Public Schools rated?
Harford County Public Schools is rated among the top 10 districts in Maryland, serving roughly 38,000 students countywide. The district offers various specialized programs, including magnet schools, advanced placement courses, and technical education options. Additionally, Harford County is home to several private and parochial school options.
Is Harford County safe?
Generally, yes. Crime rates across most of the county run below state averages, and towns like Bel Air, Fallston and Forest Hill are regularly named among the safer spots in the Baltimore area.
Where do most Aberdeen Proving Ground employees live?
APG is one of the county's biggest employers, and a lot of families connected to it end up in Bel Air, Abingdon, Aberdeen or Forest Hill, all a short commute from the gates.
